_____
The biggest issue facing public education in Oregon today is the lack of a dedicated funding stream and we at AFT-OR want to be part of finding solutions to this critical issue. A first step in that direction is for us to really understand the Oregon State Budget and the historical context that has brought us to this funding crisis. Mark Brenner has graciously agreed to lead this educational event to give us the foundational knowledge we will need to embark on a campaign to fully fund education in Oregon.
Mark Brenner is an economist and veteran Labor Notes trainer. At LERC he focuses on teaching and leadership development. Brenner is best known for his 12-year tenure directing Labor Notes, a Detroit-based non-profit dedicated to “putting the movement back in the labor movement.” Labor Notes publishes books and a monthly magazine and provides training and networking events for union activists. At Labor Notes, Brenner co-authored Secrets of a Successful Organizer and two other books. Prior to that he spent six years as a researcher at the Political Economy Research Institute of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, supporting living wage and minimum wage campaigns around the country. He has a Ph.D. in economics from the University of California Riverside.
